THE BEST ROCK & METAL FESTIVALS IN GERMANY

German music festivals are known for their variety and representing every conceivable genre. While events like The Nature One prove the fact, that techno continues to be popular across the country, festivals like The Rock am Ring and The Hurricane show that the rock scene is still... what? Rocking! Rock and metal are the most popular genres in Germany, whether as action-packed music for video games, in film productions or even as background music for slot machines. Since there is a large number of real rock and metal fans in Germany, today we are introducing you to some of the best and biggest rock events in the country.


1) M'era Luna


Since 2000, the M'era Luna has been taking place regularly on the second weekend in August at the Hildesheim airfield. It's one of the biggest gothic music festivals in Europe, a dark but colorful gathering that draws over 25,000 rock and metal fans to experience the different flavors of metal from nu-rock to ambient. M'era Luna's musical focus is on genres such as rock, metal, medieval rock, electro and gothic. This makes the event one of the largest festivals of alternative music and the so-called black scene, alongside the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig.


2) Highfield


The Highfield Festival is a popular rock event that first took place in 1998 at the Hohenfelden reservoir near Erfurt. Since 2010 it has been held regularly at Störmthaler See in the district of Leipzig. The festival features a gorgeous lake backdrop and a lineup ranging from indie rock to punk rock to hip hop. However, the best thing about the Highfield Festival is the opportunity to enjoy beach games, water sports and many other amusements, since the dreamlike location is right on the bathing lake.


3) MS Dockville


With its mix of music and visual arts, the MS Dockville is a rather cross-genre event. The festival in the Hamburg's Wilhelmsburg district took place for the first time in 2007 and since that has attracted up to 25,000 visitors every year. Here music fans will find a wide selection of music genres such as rock, independent, electro, pop and hip-hop, which make the MS Dockville one of the most popular music festivals in Germany.


4) Deichbrand-Festival




The Deichbrand Festival is an annual music festival near Cuxhaven. Deichbrand took place for the first time in 2005 and since then has had a new visitor record almost every year. With more than 50,000 visitors a year, it is now one of Germany's most visited festivals. The event features musicians from the fields of metal, emo and rock, but also hip-hop and pop. 


5) Rocco del Schlacko



The Rocco del Schlacko is an open-air music festival that has been taking place annually in Püttlingen in Saarland since 1999. The name derives from the mountain next to the first event area, which is popularly called Schlackenberg. The music genres range between rock, punk and indie, but rap and electro are also on offer. The festival has grown significantly since the first event in 1999 and is now one of the largest German rock festivals with around 28,000 visitors a year.


6) Wacken Open Air


The Wacken Open Air took place for the first time in 1990 in the municipality of the same name in Schleswig-Holstein. Since then it has been held annually on the first weekend in August and is one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest music festivals in Germany. Visitor numbers are regularly over 80,000 and make Wacken Open Air one of the biggest meeting places for rock and metal fans in Europe.


7) Hurricane und Southside


The Hurricane and The Southside festivals are among the largest rock festivals in Germany, and they have greatly expanded their musical network, particularly in recent years. The Hurricane Festival has been taking place on the Eichenring sand racing track between Bremen and Hamburg since 1997. With more than 70,000 visitors, it is one of the largest music festivals in Germany. The sister festival Southside first took place in 1999 near Munich. With around 60,000 visitors a year, it is now also one of the largest German open-air festivals.
